چکیده

The methods employed were similar to those described by Lutz et al. (5). Four to 6-week-old weanling golden hamsters weighing 40-60 gm. were housed in individual hanging cages and fed Purina Laboratory Chow and water. Tumor tissue was secured from human operative specimens and was usually transplanted within 30 minutes from the time of removal. The animals were anesthe tized with intraperitoneal Nembutal while being implanted and during subsequent examination. By an aseptic technic, bits of tissue approxi mately 2 mm. in diameter were cut from previously unexposed portions of the tumor. They were im mediately introduced via 16-gauge trocars into the submucosal space of a hamster cheek pouch which had been previously cleansed with Zephiran. Both pouches of four animals, two of either sex, were used for each tumor transplanted. Three mg. of cortisone acetate1 was adminis tered subcutaneously into the dorsum at the time of transplant and every 4 days thereafter. Cheek pouches were examined 2 weeks after transplanta tion and once weekly thereafter until there was gross evidence of growth or degeneration.

Growth of human tumors in cortisone-treated laboratory animals: the possibility of obtaining permanently transplantable human tumors.

A preliminary paper reported that human neo plasms, implanted as either a suspension of cells or a fine mince, often proliferated extensively for 810 days in the subcutaneous tissues of adult, x-radiated heterologous hosts before changes asso ciated with regression occurred; they did not sur vive in nonirradiated animals (2). Subsequently, it was noted that human tissues, similarly implanted in...

Heterologous Transplantation of Mammalian Tumors

The successful heterologous transplantation of several human tumors, including a breast carcinoma, a carcinoma of the colon, a melanotic sarcoma, and a fibrosarcoma, has been reported. Histologically, the appearance of the transplants of the carcinomata differed from that of the spontaneous tumors, but the directly observed growth of the transplanted fragments together with the presence of inva...

Heterologous Transplantation of Uro-Epithelial Tumors

Heterologous transplantation of human cancer is now firmly established.2 Human cancers of varied types and from many organs induding cancer from the skin, bone, uterus, liver, muscle, and brain have been successfully transplanted. Such transplantation into the anterior chamber of the eye of the guinea-pig has offered a method of more accurate classification of anaplastic growths because a highe...

Transplantation of the Shope papilloma and the Rous sarcoma during early developmental stages.

Serial transplantation experiments undertaken at various stages in the development of spontane ous animal tumors indicated that the ability to grow on transfer to normal unrelated animals was a developmental acquisition and not a property of the tumors from their inception (3). Transplantability of this order appeared to be coincidental to the attainment of the ability to metastasize and extend...

The transplantation of tumors to the brains of heterologous species.

The transfer of heterologous tumor tissue to the brain was reported by Shirai in 1921 (5) and con firmed by Murphy and Sturm in 1923 (4). Despite early recognition, however, the ability of the brain to support heterologous growth has not been uti lized in experimental work, nor has its application to the general problems of transplantation been explored. One phase of a study undertaken in this ...
